Mytilus edulis, blue mussel

The dark blue shelled mussel grows in clumps on rocks, pilings, and flats with each mussel anchored by tiny threads.  

Scrub thoroughly to remove threads and external mud.  Mussels are easily opened by steaming.  Serve steamed or stuffed.
