There are two types of mussels.  Blue mussels are edible and the type you generally find at seafood markets and restaurants.  Ribbed Mussels are not recommended for eating; their taste is somewhat bitter for most people.

Mytilus edulis, blue mussel

The dark blue shelled mussel grows in clumps on rocks, pilings, and flats with each mussel anchored by tiny threads.  

Scrub thoroughly to remove threads and external mud.  Mussels are easily opened by steaming.  Serve steamed or stuffed.

Geukensia demissa, ribbed mussel, marsh mussel

The ribbed mussel is found in local estuaries.  

Although perhaps less desirable than the blue mussel, the ribbed mussel is edible.
