The first annual Wellfleet Oyster Festival was held in October 2001 to determine who the fastest shucker in town was. Shucking knives were flashing, shucked shells were flying, and the tender mollusks were being slurped down as fast as they were opened. Contestants were given 2 dozen oysters to shuck, but had to keep in mind that presentation counts; each sloppy oyster added 2 seconds to the contestant's time. It was a razor thin difference, but in the end Keith Rose edged out Barbara Austin. Click the pictures to see a larger version of the picture. |
