Utilizing typical and well-understood private aquaculture techniques, a number of communities have developed programs of public stock enhancement of shellfish.  Typically, such programs are not run as put-and-take efforts, but rather as a means of both adding shellfish for future harvest but also for an increase in the number of reproductive shellfish - hopefully resulting in better future years!

• The Martha's Vineyard Shellfish Group is a collaborative effort among most of the towns on the island; participating towns share the cost and receive equitable portions of all the baby quahaugs, oysters, and bay scallops produced.  See what they're doing!
• On the eastern end of Long Island, the town of East Hampton runs a shellfish hatchery, producing juvenile shellfish for the public fisheries.
• Learn about the tremendous effort being put into restoring the Chesapeake Bay's fisheries, as well as the restoration of critical sea grass habitat and water quality.
